One of IADE’s most important roles is to help create a more Entrepreneurial Culture here in Timor-Leste – getting people interested in business issues, and helping them see business and self-employment as a positive career option.
Started in 2013, our popular annual business plan competition reaches out to hundreds of Timorese, encouraging them to come up with innovative business ideas and providing education on basic business principles.
The Business Plan Competition is open to all Timorese between 17-45, and applications come from throughout Timor-Leste.
Entrants can have business ideas for any sector – the important thing is the idea is innovative and helps develop commercial activity in Timor-Leste. Successful entrants in past years have included a plan for a mobile restaurant, a business based on developing fig plant products (e.g. fig tea) and a unique eco-lodge concept.
No business experience is required. IADE staff help applicants assess and develop their business idea and free training is provided in both Districts and Dili. All applicants get constructive feedback and suggestions on how to develop their business idea. This provides new entrepreneurs with a risk-free way to assess a business idea, and a chance to see if business-life interests them.
The top ten business plans present their concepts at a major ceremony in Timor-Plaza, where top three entrants (as assessed by a team of expert judges) receive prizes. Prizes include seed capital of up to $25,000 to allow the winners to kick-start their business. In addition, entrants from the top ten may be eligible for overseas “on-the-job” or skills training courtesy of New Zealand Aid (terms and conditions apply).
